Artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and robotic surgery: how healthcare is being transformed in the region
Bogotá, July 2026. The digitization of the healthcare sector in Latin America has moved beyond the exploratory phase. In 2026, hospitals and clinics in the region are no longer debating whether to adopt these technologies, but rather how to do so efficiently and sustainably. Three pillars are driving this transformation: robotic surgery, artificial intelligence applied to clinical management, and telemedicine that goes far beyond video calls.
“We cannot expect different results by operating under models from the past. Institutions that fail to integrate automation and data interoperability into their processes not only jeopardize their profitability but also patient safety. Colombia has the talent and infrastructure to be a regional leader in this transition,” said Juan Carlos Giraldo, Director of the Colombian Association of Hospitals and Clinics (ACHC).
In the field of artificial intelligence, the most significant change in 2026 is not technical but operational. Systems are no longer limited to supporting diagnoses—they are performing logistical tasks throughout the hospital chain: resource allocation, real-time prioritization of clinical risks, and inventory optimization. ECLAC warned in late 2025 that the region had accelerated its adoption of AI but requires urgent regulatory frameworks to ensure the technology reduces—rather than widens—gaps in care.
As part of the Meditech 2026 International Congress, a symposium dedicated exclusively to artificial intelligence will address the questions that the sector still faces: how to govern these tools, what ethical standards should govern their clinical use, and what regulations Colombia needs to ensure their safe and equitable adoption.
Telemedicine, for its part, has evolved into comprehensive digital health ecosystems. The value no longer lies in remote consultations but in continuous monitoring: specialists assessing vital signs from the clinic while the patient is at home, with data transmitted directly to the medical record under strict security and interoperability standards. According to the Ministry of Finance, nearly 58% of Colombian doctors were already using telemedicine platforms by 2025.
“Digital transformation is no longer optional. Today we’re talking about tools that optimize diagnoses, streamline processes, and expand access to specialists in remote regions. The challenge is to ensure that this evolution reaches the entire population equitably,” said Ana Garibello, Project Manager at Meditech in Corferias.
In turn, according to Dr. Giraldo, behind this transformation lies a deeper paradigm shift: technology is justified when it demonstrates real value for the patient, not just efficiency for the system. “That equation—which combines quality, cost, and relevance for the individual—is now the cornerstone of the world’s most advanced health care systems,” explains the director of the ACHC.
These three technologies will be the focus of the ninth edition of Meditech, the international healthcare trade show to be held July 28–31 at Corferias in Bogotá. The event will bring together hospitals, clinics, technology companies, and industry leaders to discuss how to implement these solutions in the Colombian and Latin American healthcare systems.
